  13. I am a rank novice when it comes to modems.  Six months ago, I bought
  14. a Creatix 14.4 from the home shopping club for $44.  Last Wednesday, I
  15. bought a 28.8, model #2834F from the Internet Shopping Network.  I
  16. finally figured out that it was a Best Data brand, of which I have
  17. never heard.  I paid $99 + $15 overnight shipping.  The modem arrived
  18. on Thursday morning (that's quick by anyone's scale).  It was
  19. defective.  Called the ISN folks, they arranged for UPS to pick up the
  20. defective modem, and sent me a new one, which arrived early Friday
  21. morning.  I installed it, and its been on since then.

  23. This modem is obviously much faster than the old 14.4, and even faster
  24. since I changed some settings in Winsock.  It is also faster than the
  25. Sportster 28.8 (33.6) external which I bought in December at Circus
  26. City, and returned after two weeks.  I imagine this is due to the
  27. changes I made in Winsock and the fact I could not get the Sportster
  28. to work right, no matter what I tried.  I figured I'd better return it
  29. before the 30 day period was up, or before I had a nervous breakdown,
  30. whichever came first.

  32. Anyway, I am very happy with this modem (so far).  Many of you will
  33. probably attribute my happiness to my ignorance, but that's OK.  I
  34. simply use the modem to connect to my ISP and surf the net, read and
  35. post in my newsgroups, send and receive E-Mail, IRC, and FTP.

  37. I figured this was an RPI modem, but found it doesn't work with
  38. winrpi.drv (which did wonders for the Home Shopping Club 14.4).  I'm
  39. using the cybercom.drv.  I called the toll-call service number, and
  40. tried to talk to a guy who was obviously in a great hurry to get back
  41. to what he was doing (reading the funny papers?) so I graciously
  42. slammed down the phone.

  44. Anyway, if anyone has any information, suggestions, flames, or
  45. admonishments for me about this modem, I would be most grateful.
