- To paraphrase the TV guy, "I'm not paying a lot for this modem."
-
- I am a rank novice when it comes to modems. Six months ago, I bought
- a Creatix 14.4 from the home shopping club for $44. Last Wednesday, I
- bought a 28.8, model #2834F from the Internet Shopping Network. I
- finally figured out that it was a Best Data brand, of which I have
- never heard. I paid $99 + $15 overnight shipping. The modem arrived
- on Thursday morning (that's quick by anyone's scale). It was
- defective. Called the ISN folks, they arranged for UPS to pick up the
- defective modem, and sent me a new one, which arrived early Friday
- morning. I installed it, and its been on since then.
-
- This modem is obviously much faster than the old 14.4, and even faster
- since I changed some settings in Winsock. It is also faster than the
- Sportster 28.8 (33.6) external which I bought in December at Circus
- City, and returned after two weeks. I imagine this is due to the
- changes I made in Winsock and the fact I could not get the Sportster
- to work right, no matter what I tried. I figured I'd better return it
- before the 30 day period was up, or before I had a nervous breakdown,
- whichever came first.
-
- Anyway, I am very happy with this modem (so far). Many of you will
- probably attribute my happiness to my ignorance, but that's OK. I
- simply use the modem to connect to my ISP and surf the net, read and
- post in my newsgroups, send and receive E-Mail, IRC, and FTP.
-
- I figured this was an RPI modem, but found it doesn't work with
- winrpi.drv (which did wonders for the Home Shopping Club 14.4). I'm
- using the cybercom.drv. I called the toll-call service number, and
- tried to talk to a guy who was obviously in a great hurry to get back
- to what he was doing (reading the funny papers?) so I graciously
- slammed down the phone.
-
- Anyway, if anyone has any information, suggestions, flames, or
- admonishments for me about this modem, I would be most grateful.
- Praise and adoration also welcome.
-
- Thanks
-
